Ramana Maharshi

A person asked a question on Quora to know what does Ramana means by ‘There are no others”? You can read all the answers that this question received on Quora by using the hyperlink above.

Many people answered basis what they have read somewhere, so here I am trying to share my answer from my experience in spiritual journey till date.

There is a big difference between knowing that the other exists not and experiencing it. I too remain intrigued for many years. Yesterday only it is revealed to me as experience of oneness or feeling that only constant and eternal is one. And every human being has that constant and eternal as centre of being, but we need to discover it within to be able to experience it. With that experience the other or the world cease to exist as eternal, and so in that frame of reference other exists not.

In other words we exist only as individual beings, and rest exists as our projection only. The world is our projection only, our thoughts created it. The moment thoughts stop, the world too ceases to exist.

Whatever we do in our life, only that is going to affect us in our life. How we respond to the situations in that instantaneous moment is going to affect us, and nothing else is going to affect us.

If I had focused more on others as a cause for the setback, I could not have learned the lesson needed to make progress further. And in long run this may resulted in mush greater loss too, because in that case my focus get shifted on others for my setback and i cannot change others!
Not only it is very difficult to change others but it is far less rewarding too. Since it depends upon the intelligence of the changed person to help me or not, when i am in need of such help.
But if i bring change in myself then it is less arduous and the changed me is available 24×7!
So according to Ramana, treating the other as they exist not, is actually a way to shift focus from others to ourself. So indirectly he is shifting our focus towards our personal inner journey.

Another much deeper perspective of seeing anybody as your past or future, because in present moment we are living in all of our lives. So by ‘There are no other’ he means that we are encountering our past or future versions in present moment. And if we are not able to recognise them as such then we need to dedicate ourself more to discover the present moment instead of being busy in tackling the other.

My suggestions:-

Awareness Meditation is the way worked for me and I tried it first during brushing my teeth in the morning after trying 8–10 meditations over period of 15 years! So there is no need to reinvent the circle for you. May be you too find it suitable otherwise with Dynamic meditation and/or Kundalini in the evening it is suitable for most of the people. There are 110 other meditation techniques discovered by Indian Mystic Gorakhnath about 500years before and further modified by Osho for contemporary people that one can experiment and the suitable one could be practiced in routine life.

Hi ….. I write my comments from my personal experiences of my inner journey. This post may include teachings of Mystics around the world which from my personal experience I found worth following even today. For more have a look at my linktree website for getting regular updates through social media lor subscribe to YouTube channel or listen to the podcasts etc.

For references of content on Osho, Copyright © OSHO International Foundation, An MP3 audio file of this discourse can be downloaded from Osho(dot)com or you can listen or watch his discourses @ OSHO International channel of YouTube where you can get subtitles in language of your choice or you can read the entire book online at the Osho Library. Many of Osho’s books are available online at Amazon.

My suggestions:-

Osho International Online (OIO) provides facility to learn these from your home, through Osho Meditation Day @€20.00 per person. You can learn Dynamic meditations from disciples of Osho. OIO rotate times through three timezones NY,Berlin and Mumbai.
